Work in progress – Delancey St., Philadelphia

underpainting, oil on Masonite, 16x20 in.

This is the start of a new painting of Philadelphia, some brownstones with great shadows from the early evening sunlight. Began this with a coating of tinted gesso (light, greyish blue) on cradled masonite. Underpainting is done in burnt sienna and turpenoid (very little). I have started the color layer on top of this and plan to do the whole thing in one pass (wet-into-wet) intending to keep a very loose, expressive feel to it.
