I treat figures as one mass, particularly when they are part of an urban landscape. Although the woman in this painting is prominently positioned, she is very much connected to the figures around her and the landscape itself. I do this by just painting shapes next to one another and not thinking of the figures as individuals. The sense of connection in this piece will be further developed as the shadows and street become more complete. I am working the entire canvas as I always do and must be careful not to have any particular area become more finished looking than another, this too helps to build a unified composition and further strengthens the connection of all the elements in the painting.
