Concepts presented:

  • begin by blocking in the basic forms
  • draw all of the elements in their complete form even if they are behind other elements–for example, draw each apple as a full sphere, even if you only see a small part of it–this will ensure that items in the bowl feel as if they are stacked inside the bowl and not floating within it
  • make sure all proportions are correct, then move into your value study (use a dark neutral color in pastel for the underpainting)
  • next, using hard pastels, begin blocking in color with the darkest darks
  • move into the medium values working the entire composition to the same level of completedness
  • last of all, add the brightest, lightest colors and the highlights
  • be sure to use color variation throughout, using the complement of each color to provide neutrality in the shadows, carefully look for subtle colors that appear in the highlights and secondary reflections, these will help to give a feeling of light and atmosphere
