Very Quick Plein Air Study

From yesterday, painted in about 20 minutes. The sky had a nice glow toward the horizon but a huge dark cloud bank was moving in above. I managed to get about 15 or 20 minutes of painting in on this before the raindrops started hitting the canvas and leaving splotches. Painting on an overcast day can be challenging even without the actual rain. Lighting is not as dramatic and value ranges are much more subtle. It’s a good way to practice capturing atmosphere and diffused lighting, plus the act of painting quickly favors bold confident brushwork and abstraction of forms.
