Concepts presented:

  • Think of flowers as masses of form rather an focusing on individual petals
  • Mass in the values in burnt sienna
  • Begin adding the darks, here I’ve used alizarin with a little bit of burnt umber for the darkest areas on the flowers
  • Using alizarin and light red ochre, I mapped in the brighter parts of the petals, then moved on to do the greens using a combination of cobalt and cadmium yellow for the brights, cobalt and yellow ochre for the medium values and cobalt and burnt umber for the darkest darks on the foliage
  • background is yellow ochre with touches of violet for variation
  • The accents on the petals are done in titanium white with a bit of violet on the shadow areas and a bit of cad yellow on the highlights
  • Move flower forms around as needed to balance your composition
  • Suggest petals rather than illustrate them if you prefer a looser, more abstract look
