June's landscape, demo in pastel on LaCarte paper, about 5x8"

June's landscape, demo in pastel on LaCarte paper, about 5x8"

Concepts presented:

  • Begin with a value study using vine charcoal (not compressed)
  • Block in colors boldly to cover up the paper, work from dark to light
  • Use the edge of the pastel to create a wide swath of color and a bold, confident stroke
  • Don’t be a slave to your photo or to the landscape you are working from life, use color expressively
  • Develop the work to whatever level of detail you want, add more detail for a realistic look, less if you prefer to keep the work semi-abstract
  • Thank you June for allowing me to use your lovely photo in my spur-of-the-moment demo
