I don’t often use watercolor, I prefer to use acrylic with water if I am doing studies on paper. I can get more vibrant colors, particularly if I work on paper designed for acrylics. Both of the above studies were done on this type of paper, I like it much better than traditional watercolor paper which is much more absorbent. Acrlyic paper is closer in feel to canvas and the paint sits on top longer. Also, I don’t feel compelled to leave the white of the paper visible in areas as in traditional watercolor. Probably the biggest hurdle for me with watercolor is working from light to dark, this is the direct opposite of the way I work with oil, pastel and acrylic, my primary mediums.

Watercolor is a beautiful medium when handled by artists skilled in its use, I just am not one of them. 😀
