urban landscape study, pastel, 9x12" on Richeson sanded paper

Concepts presented:

  • surface texture influences the end result as well as the process
  • Richeson paper used here is much less “toothy” than the Wallis I have been working on in previous demos
  • Richeson paper does not take NuPastels quite as well as the Wallis, but the Unison pastels (made by Richeson) go on very smoothly
  • working to keep this as “scratchy” as possible, using the paper and medium to achieve this end result
  • although the NuPastels don’t go on as smoothly, that can be seen as a positive if you are trying to achieve a rougher, more edgy feeling
  • I used the Unison pastels after first laying in my large shapes and the figures with the NuPastels
  • focus is on movement, urban colors and energy to complement the subject
