Acrylics – Class Notes from 10/30/08

acrylic with gel as medium on canvas pad

acrylic with gel as medium on canvas pad, about 8x8"

Concepts presented:

  • Begin with under painting value study in burnt umber
  • Used limited palette of cobalt blue, cerulean, yellow oxide, dioxazine violet, titanium white
  • Color developed by building layer upon layer
  • Introduced a small amount of yellow oxide and dioxazine violet into the shadow areas of clouds for color variation
  • Increased the darkness of the sky at the top and slowly migrated to more of a light cerulean color at the bottom to project a sense of depth and space
  • Used 3/4″ flat brush for entire study
  • Used slow drying gel medium for mixing
  • Kept a semi-abstract feeling to this which is enhanced by the lack of any land mass or horizon line
