demo / study, urban landscape, 5x7" on Wallis paper

Concepts presented:
  • Translating a very busy composition onto a small space forces you to eliminate detail and rely on implied sense of action, perspective and space
  • Focus on shapes and values
  • Think of objects as masses rather than individual entities, ie. crowd as a unit rather than individual people, traffic stream rather than individual vehicles, etc.
  • Color harmony in this sketch is based on primary colors
  • When working from photos don’t just copy what you see–use the photo as a point of departure only, focus on the elements key to the overall tone/message of your painting
  • Work only from your own photos
